What Are Solid Lubricants?
Solid lubricants are powders, coatings, or compressed films that reduce friction and wear without using oils or greases. They're ideal for extreme operating conditions—such as high pressure, high temperature, contamination, vacuum, or environments where liquid lubricants can't stay in place.citeturn0search0turn0search12
🔍 Common Types & Properties 1. Layered Materials-
Graphite: Performs well in humid environments; low friction due to stacked carbon layers. Prone to oxidation and requires moisture to maintain smoothness.citeturn0search2turn0search4turn0search7
-
Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS₂): Extremely low friction under high loads and good at elevated temperatures (up to ~350 °C in air). Limited by oxidation in moist air.citeturn0search2turn0search6turn0search13
-
Tungsten Disulfide (WS₂): Similar to MoS₂ but with better oxidation resistance and performance at higher temperatures.citeturn0search2turn0search11
-
Hexagonal Boron Nitride (h‑BN): Sometimes called “white graphite.” Offers thermal stability and electrical insulation, used in high‑temperature or chemical environments.citeturn0search2turn0search4
-
PTFE (Teflon): A solid polymer with very low coefficient of friction (~0.04). Resistant to chemicals and suitable for cryogenic to ~260 °C. Low load-carrying capacity.citeturn0search2turn0search4turn0search7
-
Soft metals like lead, tin, indium; and oxides such as TiO₂, ZnO—used in specialized high-temperature or anti-seize coatings.citeturn0search4turn0search5
